In the past several posts we discussed some important steps in making a smooth transition to changing careers at 50 and beyond. The age factor in planning a career change can be a hindrance or an asset. Let’s see if we can make your age an asset in planning your career change.

In your plans to change careers at 50 and beyond a step often overlooked or given less than a careful analysis is the required homework into the planned new career. The planned new career may sound exciting but virtually every career has it’s boring moments and periods where the job is just plain awful.

This is where your homework comes into play. Only with the right information can you make the important decision to decide if the planned new career is the right one for you.

By homework, we mean talking to others who work in the field. Don’t stop at one interview but make it a point to learn from those experienced all the way down to those who recently started. Learn all aspects of the job. What skills are required? What do those in the career regularly read? What web sites do they normally look at? What conferences do they attend and what groups do they belong to?

Don’t be discouraged if the career, after your study and homework, turns out to be something you would not want to do. Keep looking, the next possible career that you study may be an exact fit. Or as some have learned they develop a new career based on the needs of possible employers.

An interesting story is how a teacher created a new position as sales manager and successfully changes careers after 50.

Make use of your network in doing your homework on the planned new career. Of course the internet can be a great resource in doing your career change homework. So get to it, stay flexible, and doing something on your homework every day. Soon you’ll have a body of information that will help you make the right career decision. Use your age and experience in project management to get you pointed in the right direction.
