Uncertainty is all around us. A business or career we thought would stand the test of time becomes obsolete, sometimes is seems it happens so fast you are on the beach and the new career has sailed.

Recently in talking to a friend, who spent two years of college learning what he thought would be a long term career, suddenly found himself out of a job and a career.  After years of experience, which he though was valuable, it all became worthless in an instant when some new software transformed his education and experience into something that could be learned in a few days of study.

Here are some tips to keep you up to date in reinventing your career.

1. Keep your skills up to date. Know what is happening in your career and try to stay ahead of possible changes. Go to conference and seminars. Have a short but important list of blogs and websites that you read and review on a regular basis. Your after 50 career planning should also include a strong reading program.

2. Don’t neglect helping others in their career and personal challenges. Build your network. Your network can be a valuable source of information about new careers and new opportunities.

3. Periodically bring your resume up to date. New accomplishments and skills should be added to your resume. This exercise, in conjunction to your career planning, will keep you alert to how your skills might transfer to  new careers in both your current or an entirely new industry.

4. Adding new skills does not mean spending thousands to getting an advanced degree. Many times there are online learning opportunities that will allow you to learn similar skills, quicker and much cheaper.

5. Consider, in your after 50 career planning, adding another line of income. Often these efforts lead to new more satisfying careers. Learn how others started a small business and made the career change after 50.

A career change after 50 can be rewarding and a long term career solution. You have the experience to do the proper career planning, put this experience to good use and your after 50 career change can be the start of a rewarding  journey.
