This job hunting mistake was not even on anyone’s radar 20 and maybe 10 years ago. But today it can mean the difference in finding the right job in a reasonable period of time, or having a job hunt that will drag on forever. And then when a job is offered it will not fit your career plan or it will be something you have no interest in doing. Of course the pay will be lousy in a less than favorable organization.

Recently, I talked to a soon to be college graduate. With less than two months to graduation they had no prospects and only a surface knowledge on how to find their dream job. If you are 50 and over and you were in this situation I might give you a pass. This teck savoy college student who grew up with the internet and computers was way behind the job hunting curve.

What was their bigĀ  job hunting mistake? Being invisible on the internet. We Googled their name. Nothing. As far as the internet was concerned they did not exist. The only thing worse than this is someone with their same name who was involved in criminal or shady activity. Bottom line-they had no “brand.”

With competition at an all time high for many jobs, it’s very easy for the hiring manager to Google your name and if nothing comes up or they find something negative you’re out of the running for the job.

Building your brand should be something that is an integral part of your career and job hunting plan. Whether you’re a beginning college student or a 50 plus experienced manager looking to change careers it should be a central part of your overall plan.

For the college student it could be writing an article or two a month about you career field and publishing them on the internet. Or writing a press release on some community service they worked on and organized.

For the more experienced manager there are numerous opportunities to be recognized on the internet. Get elected or appointed to position in a community or career related group. Write and publish an internet press release on the event. Give a speech or get published and make sure it gets recognized on the internet.

There is much more to the “branding” of your name. I have several articles on my site http://careersafter50.com and you can read how others used “branding” to find the right job in the right career through career planning.
