Walt, age 54, had his inventory control manager job of 27 years
outsourced. After several months of fruitless job search for an "inventory control manager" position he
decided to assess his situation, look critically at his interests, his likes and dislikes and move on with
finding a new career.
Walt had a degree in accounting but had used only a small part of this education in his long held
position. He was research oriented, had a steep learning curve and enjoyed solving a wide range business

researched the various aspects of career planning after 50 and the challenges of changing careers.

He viewed his situation as a business problem and the first thing he needed was a career
plan that would move him step by step to his planned career. Walt had considerable business experience
designing, developing and implementing business plans.
After research and analysis his goal was to work in business accounting and more specifically in tax
planning and consulting. These career goals were arrived at through a series of
informational interviews he secured through contacts from his university’s alumni group, on which
over the years he had served in various volunteer executive positions.
Walt wrote out a comprehensive new career plan. His career change after
50 would move him into his planned new career.
Step-by-Step Journey-Change Job and Career After 50
First he enrolled in his local university taking several current tax accounting courses. He also
began a course of self-study of an online tax planning study course that fit his needs.
He secured an entry level seasonal tax preparation job and completed the required training. After tax
season he secured a part time accounting position with a small local accounting firm.
He put up a blog and published one or more articles each week on tax accounting, related
subjects, and business tax planning. Through his alumni group and linkedin contacts he secured speaking engagements
regarding business tax issues. He issued a variety of relevant press releases. This secured interviews on local
radio and TV outlets.
All this exposure resulted in a flow of added business to his employer, he was put on
full time, his pay increased and soon he was offered a partnership in the accounting firm. Currently Walt is
working toward taking the exams for a CPA designation.
He enjoys his new career, there is something new every day and he is becoming the "go to"
person in his new career field.
